For God and Country
The American Legion was founded in 1919 in Paris, France, at the close of World War I. The organization now includes wartime veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon/Grenada periods, Operation Just Cause in Panama and has grown into the largest veteran's organization in the world. Aberdeen Post 72 was granted a temporary charter by our National Headquarters in Indianapolis, IN on April 9, 1938. On January 11, 1943, Myrtle McBride and others received a charter for Auxiliary Unit 72. Our Post Home was used as a USO during World War II as troops would stop in at the train depot in Aberdeen. Aberdeen Post 72 received it's permanent charter on February 6, 1947.
American Legion Post 72 N.C. at a Glance
Post 72 has seen a resurgence that now has our Post roles at 150 members and growing. We have refurbished our Post Home, added Chapter 72 of the American Legion Riders on August 14, 2007, re-chartered Auxiliary Unit 72, and for good measure chartered Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 72 on March 9, 2009. Together we are proud to be a family of wartime veterans, spouses, parents, and children still serving America!!
American Legion Riders
Riders in all states have escorted military units returning home from combat tours overseas, conducted massive cross-country fundraising events for wounded warriors from all services, and have raised millions of dollars for countless local, state and national charities. Many Riders, supported by their departments, conduct annual statewide Legacy Runs in direct support of American Legion scholarship progras of Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW), supporting our wounded servicemembers across the nation.


Sons Of the American Legion
Since 1988, S.A.L. has raised more than $5.8 million for The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation. S.A.L. members have volunteered over 500,000 hours at veterans hospitals and raised over $1,000,000 for VA hospitals and VA homes. The Sons also support the Citizens Flag Alliance, a coalition dedicated to protecting the U.S. flag from desecration through a constitutional amendment.
American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. Through its nearly 10,500 units located in every state and some foreign countries, the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with The American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals
